Deciding on the appropriate chainsaw for your needs

Your requirements are dependent on a number of factors ranging from the type of lumber of wood you will most often come into contact with, as well as your personal preferences.

  1. Gasoline powered chainsaws –

Traditional gasoline powered chainsaws offer a high power and performance rating while also lasting long in between refilling sessions. The chainsaws come with a variety of different specifications ranging from 32cc motors all the way up to 78cc ones with a net power rating of over 5 hp and weighing in at just under 7 kg. Eg models. PS-35, PS-421, PS6400 W

  1. Electric powered chainsaws –

Generally lighter to carry and without the fuel guzzling gasoline powered motor, electric powered chainsaws are growing in popularity due to their lighter weight which often translated to higher maneuverability and lower decibel count. Eg model. ES-173 A

Common Issues

While Dolmar’s range of chainsaws have been surpassing expectations with their reliable product range for a long time, it’s important to keep in mind that these are externally used power tools at the end of the day. Having said that, they are prone to occasional faults due to being constantly exposed to the outdoor elements. Fortunately, this usually has no effect on the life of the chainsaw and they can generally be fixed right at your own garage, without having to visit a dealer. Here are some of the more common issues owners may run into –

  1. Unable to start the chainsaw: One of the most common reasons for starting trouble with almost any chainsaw is a problem with the spark plug – this is generally seen more often in chainsaws that are over a year old. Clean out the spark plug or replace it with a new one. If this doesn’t make a difference, the carburater may need to be recalibrated.
  2. Chainsaw not cutting properly: A dull worn out chain is usually the cause for decline in the chainsaw’s cutting ability – it is recommended that you check the chain blade before every mowing session to ensure its sharpness profile is high enough for the task at hand. If the blade is fine, check the tension of the chain as a loose chain will be less effective at cutting.
  3. Chainsaw not turning: A broken or worn out clutch is usually the cause for a chainsaw’s inability to turn the chain blade. This is more commonly seen in tools that have crossed the 14-16 month mark, especially ones that have not been serviced in a while. Worn out clutch pads will allow the engine to run but without turning the chain, so replace the clutch pads after disengaging the clutch drum.
